Does Travel Insurance Cover Hotels During a Flight Delay?

By TripCoverScout Editorial · Updated October 28, 2026

A hotel during a flight delay may be reimbursable if your policy includes an applicable delay benefit and your circumstances satisfy its terms. A delayed flight on its own does not prove a hotel bill will be paid.

Check the covered cause and waiting period

Find the delay benefit in the policy certificate. Look for the required delay duration, covered causes and any conditions about where you are traveling. Do not borrow a waiting period from another plan or from an online example.

Compare limits before booking

Check the daily allowance, total benefit and which expenses share the same limit. A room, meals and local transport might compete for one allowance. Ask the assistance team whether advance approval is required and what evidence to keep.

Ask the airline first

For an overnight disruption, ask whether the carrier provides accommodation. U.S. airline commitments differ, and the reason for the disruption matters. Record what the airline provides and disclose refunds, vouchers or other payments when submitting an insurance claim.

Keep a simple evidence folder

For example, an overnight weather delay and an airline-caused cancellation may be treated differently by a carrier even if both leave you needing a room. Your policy has its own test. Read insurance versus airline compensation before treating them as the same claim.
